| This 1.1 meter high stupa was found in T'aehwa-temple
site and the twelve animals of the oriental zodiac are
carved in relief. It is said that the temple, T`aehwa,
which once stood here, was built during the reign of Silla
Queen Sondok (632-646). A stupa is a pagoda to in which
to install a noted monk's ashes. This is not only the
nation's oldest bell-shaped stupa but the only one with
zodiac figures. The bell-shaped main body with a niche
is erected on the squared-bottom pedestal, carved with
12 zodiac figures which have human faces : a figure of
a horse is carved in the south and a mouse in the north.
It is believed that the stupa, which was returned to this
place from T`aewha-dong in 1962, was erected in late Unified
Silla period. |
