Birthplace of Master Oesol Choi Hyeonbae
Only the house site and retaining wall remain at the birthplace of Master Choi Hyeonbae. It was restored to the present appearance in 2008. The birthplace includes the main building, outhouse and attached building.
Master Oesol Choi Hyeonbae
Master Oesol was an independence activist and Hangeul scholar who devoted his whole life to the distribution of Hangeul with the strong confidence that maintaining the language and alphabet were the way to restore the country during the Japanese occupation of Korea. After liberation, he concentrated on restoring a spirit of love for the country and the spirit of people by progressive activity in academic associations, including the publication of the <Big Korean Dictionary> and the standardization of horizontal writing in Korean. The Korean government awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation Independence Medal to him in 1962 for admiration of his merits including for the Independence Movement and awarded him the Order of Civil Merit, Rose of Sharon Medal when he died in March 1970.
