Ulsan Dongheon and Naea
Main building where the Ulsan governor processed official business in the past.
The Ulsan Government Office was the main building where the Ulsan governor processed official business in the past. It was moved or closed when Ulsan was promoted or degraded to Bu, Hyeon or Dohobu. The present Ulsan Government Office was built by Kim Suo, the Ulsan Magistrate in 1681 (7th Year of King Sukjong’s reign in Joseon), and named ‘Ilhakheon’ as his son was appointed to the magistrate in 1695 (21st year of King Sukjong’s reign in Joseon). In 1763 (39th year of King Yeongjo’s reign), it was renamed ‘Banhakheon’ after Hong Ikdae, the Ulsan magistrate, rebuilt it. The building was used as the meeting room of the provincial government after the Japanese occupation of Korea and renovated to its present appearance in 1981. The living quarters in the Ulsan Government Office area have no walls as the place where the magistrate lived.
