First Private Education Institution in Ulsan during Joseon Period

As the first private education institution in Ulsan during the Joseon period, the Gugan Seowon Confucian Academy was built in 1678 (4th year of King Sukjong’s reign) and received the tablet (Royal edict) ‘Gugang Seowon’ in 1694 (20th year of King Sukjong’s reign). While having endeavored for teaching students and holding ancestral rites for about 200 years, Gugang Seowon was closed in 1871 (8th year of King Gojong’s reign) due to the order from the regent Heungseon to abolish the Seowon Confucian academy. Seowon, a Confucian academy, was formed to develop scholars during the Joseon period by educating and enlightening students and holding ancestral rites. The Gugang Seowon Confucian Academy enshrines the ancestral tablets of Master Jeong Mongju and Master Yi Eonjeok. Furthermore, Seowon acted as a self-governing organization in the village and as a place for activity for Confucian scholars of the village. At present, Gugan Seowon provides a variety of free programs for residents including Chinese character classes, personality and etiquette education for teenagers, an etiquette class for women and a liberal arts class.
