Chunguisa Temple
Shrine cherishing the tablets for 214 martyrs fighting against Japanese invaders during the Japanese invasion
Chunguisa Temple is the shrine housing the tablets for 214 martyrs fighting against the Japanese invaders in Ulsan during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and 1597 as well as ancestral tablets for the unknown martyrs, for whom it holds memorial rites. After surviving the Japanese invasion twice, King Seonjo appreciated the meritorious service of the martyrs in Ulsan during the wars, had their names recorded after designating them as the Seonmu-wonjong-gongsin (meritorious retainer) and promoted Ulsan-gun and Eonyang-hyeon together to Ulsan Dohobu for residents overcoming hardships. Built to memorialize the loyalty of ancestors, Chunguisa Temple holds the ancestral rites to remember their loyalty on April 14 and Oct. 15 every year.
