Pavilion built when Great Monk Jajang built Taehwasa Temple

When the great monk Jajang arrived in Ulsan after studying Buddhist truths in the Tang dynasty in 643 (12th year of Queen Seondoek’s reign in Silla period), he built Taehwasa Temple. Taehwaru Pavilion was built on the cliff of Hwangryongyeon along the Taehwagang River at that time. Taehwaru Pavilion in Ulsan is the representative pavilion of the southeastern region in Korea along with Chokseongnu Pavilion in Jinju and Yeongnamru Pavilion in Milyang. It is one of the representative historic sites along the Taehwagang River and maintains the tradition and identity of Ulsan intact. Taehwaru Pavilion was burnt during the Japanese invasion in 1592 and was restored in about 400 years as a part of the ‘Taehwagang Revitalization Project of History and Future’. By the strolling alley connected to Simnidaebat Field, the Taehwagang River can be better observed. It is more convenient to appreciate the Taehwagang River and Taehwaru Pavilion because of the sloped alley for the physically challenged and the shelters for resting.
