Temple soothing the sorrow from a country’s ruination

Haenamsa Temple was built by the monk Guha of Tongdosa Temple in 1936, during the Japanese occupation of Korea, to save the public suffering from the sorrow of ruination as it endured many kinds of mistreatment. Several great monks stayed in this temple after the monk Guha and endeavored to widely spread the profound truth of Buddhism. The temple actively propagated Buddhism including the enlightenment of Buddhists in the local community.

Buddhist Deities Painting

The Buddhist Deities Painting in Haenamsa Temple was enshrined in Biroam Yaksajeon, Tongdosa Temple, Yangsan and made by monk artists including Sanghyu in 1904 (8th Gwangmu year) in accordance with the painting record. Sanghyu stayed in Gyeongsang-do including Haeinsa Temple in Hapcheon, Daeseungsa Temple in Mungyeong and Beomeosa Temple in Busan in the early 20th century. He was classified into the Buddhist artist group pursuing new trends through showing a variety of changes in terms of the shape of a person, screen configuration and color.
