문화가 숨쉬는 울산중구 - Ulsan Jung-gu Tour

The embankment artifacts in Yaksa-dong, Jung-gu, Ulsan (Historic Site No. 528) are of an ancient irrigation facility built over the course of the end of the Period of the Three Kingdoms to the early Unified Silla period (6th to 7th Century). Unlike other ancient irrigation systems, including Gimje Byeokgolje, it is meaningful because its building period and technologies were found for the first time among those irrigation facilities.
The Yaksa-dong Embankment Artifacts, which were opened to the public in 2010, drew academic attention because its construction shape connects the ridges on both sides of the valley on the upper region of Yaksacheon River. Two years of excavation work identified the construction method of the embankment by completely digging out a cross section of the structure. The embankment was not built simply only with mud but was built in a very complicated structure like the dams of today. A very sticky silt layer and a layer containing shells were made on a prepared foundation. The ancient civil engineering technologies, including the Buyeop technology using twigs with leaves, were applied to this embankment. This site has therefore been evaluated as having important academic value. Imagine that calcium carbonate from the oyster shells caught by people in the Silla period on the lower region of the Taehwagang River strengthened the mud embankment as it met the water. It is a fascinating story to consider.
The Yaksa-dong Embankment Artifact Exhibition Hall displays the grand, life-size embankment artifacts as the newest thing to see in Ulsan. The trapezoid-shaped construction layers of the embankment that was a cross section of the embankment artifacts of the entire wall create a special atmosphere.
