Temple praying for safeguarding Silla

Baekyangsa Temple was built on Hamwolsan mountain by the Seon master Baekyang in 932 (6th year of King Gyeongsun’s reign in Silla period) for the peace of Ulsan Village and safeguarding Silla. The temple was rebuilt by Seon priest Yeonjeong in 1678 (4th year of King Sukjong’s reign in the Joseon period) and by Seon priest Seolin in 1793 (29th year of King Yeongjo’s reign). It was reconstructed by the nun Bohyeon in 1922. Baekyangsa Temple deep in the Hamwolsan Mountains was gradually exposed as Ulsan was becoming urbanized. This traditional temple can be easily accessed now. Mountain hikers start the day viewing the East Sea when the sun rises beyond Ulsan Bay and listening to the sound of the bell from Baekyangsa Temple resonating over Ulsan.
